CV writing is part part, part science, and completely subjective.

There are millions of websites and thousands of books offering advice on how to write a winning CV. But every recruitment agent and HR manager has a different idea about what works on a CV ... how do you know what works?

Basic rules everyone (mostly) agrees on:

  • Do not use a pretty picture cover page.
  • Do not include a photo of yourself.
  • Do not state your age, marital status, religion, IRD number, bank account number, children’s names, etc.
  • Do not provide your current work number.
  • Do not use irrelevant or old information.
  • Do not put anything negative.
     
  • Include contact information.
  • Include employment history.
  • Include qualifications and awards.
  • Use bullet points instead of solid text.
  • Write in third person but keep use of all pronouns to a minimum.
  • Use action verbs to describe your skills and experiences instead of clichés.

But it's a lot more complex than that. You have three choices on learning how to write a great CV:
  1. Spend hours upon hours trying to work it out for yourself.
